If talk of coaching the Three Lions and Super Eagles seems unrealistic, Odemwingie has a backup plan to help him return to the global sporting scene.
With golf being brought back to the Olympics in 2016, he wants to see a Nigerian athlete aim to score at the biggest tournament on Earth.
“If I couldn’t play as a golfer, at least I could be on the team of a golfer who was going to play there,” he explained.
“I want to introduce people to the sport and build a generation of golfers, especially from Nigeria, that will participate in the Olympics.”
The former striker knows all about the thrill of the Olympics having been a member of the Nigerian team. lost the 2008 Beijing final 1-0 to Argentina.
While not every country takes Olympic football seriously, Odemwingie says Nigerians see things differently.
“The medal is very respected,” he said of his silver medal, also mentioning the medal. men’s team gold medal in Atlanta in 1996.
“It’s a way to sell the project to our state government.”
In his efforts to spread the word about golf, Odemwingie planned to meet with officials and big corporate names in his hometown, hoping to promote the benefits of his new sport.
“If we had more golf courses, there would be tourism. Children can get scholarships in good countries.
“If someone sees an opportunity, they can take (it) and make a great life for themselves.”
And he is hoping to add his name to the cause, with future plans for a golf and football academy in Benin City.
“It’s like any other sport. The earlier you start, the better your chances of becoming an elite athlete.”
For a man who is now active professionally in two sports, Odemwingie’s golf missionary work shines through.
“One of my dreams is to see the Nigerian flag on the European Tour or the PGA Tour.
“Hopefully my story will encourage people to start participating, encourage parents to take their children and give them a taste of golf. I am sure many of them will also love the sport This is like me”.
