Glasgow City finished 2024 top of the SWPL as Hibs stunned Rangers

Glasgow City go into the winter break five points clear at the top of the SWPL table after beating Dundee United as Hibernian stunned second-placed Rangers.

Defending champions Celtic easily won 5-0 against Spartans, while Montrose escaped the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Queen’s Park.

Third-placed Hearts were held to a goalless draw at Motherwell.

Hearts, having played a game more, are now just two points ahead of Edinburgh rivals Hibs, who produced a devastating display to hand Rangers their second defeat of the round 3-0.

Kathleen McGovern scored in the first half at Broadwood, bringing down Rangers goalkeeper Vic Esson from inside the box, before launching a counter-attack to fire into the top corner. Substitute Rosie Livingstone grabbed third place with six minutes remaining.

The result saw Glasgow City extend their lead at the top, with Katie Lockwood and Lisa Forrest scoring twice in the bottom club’s 7-0 win. Amy Muir, Sam van Diemen and Brenna Lovera also scored as Dundee United had no answer.

Doubles from Emma Lawton and Saoirse Noonan, combined with Kelly Clark’s strike, handed Sparta a heavy defeat, leaving Celtic nine points behind Man City with two games in hand.

Montrose are outside the bottom three – ahead of Aberdeen in terms of goals scored – after Morgan Hay’s own goal decided the outcome of the match against Queen’s Park.

Aberdeen’s match with Partick Thistle was postponed because of high winds.

SWPL action will continue on January 12.
