David Moyes is negotiating with Everton about the possibility of returning to Goodison Park after Sean Dyche was fired.
Although a deal is yet to be done and Moyes is not the only candidate, BBC Sport has said the Scot is the frontrunner by a reputable source.
Negotiations on a contract will continue on Friday.
Former Burnley boss Dyche was sacked on Thursday with the club sitting 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone.
They only won 3 out of 19 matches in the national championship this season.
Moyes led Everton from 2002 to 2013 and recently said he was not ready to retire from football management but also did not want to do the job of “fighting relegation”.
He guided West Ham to the Europa Conference League in 2023, but has been out of work since leaving them last season.
